Creativity Shines by Jeremy - January 2015 Scholarship Essay
I have had many great teachers in my many years of learning so far. Some are very serious while others are very sarcastic. Every individual in a classroom learns differently. Some may like the serious and some may like the sarcastic. Overall, the best teachers are those who are creative. Every student, no matter the learning style, learns better if they are actively engaged in their learning. When the teacher gets creative on how they teach, the students are more engaged, and therefore, they absorb the information like sponges. If I had one thing to tell any teacher, it would be to get creative with your assignments and teaching style.
In seventh grade science I had a wonderful and creative teacher. He wrote his own songs to Disney tunes to teach us about the cells of the human body which he called "Cell Songs." These creative songs made the whole class super excited to learn about cells. To this day, like six years later, I still remember all the information I learned in those songs and can even still recall a few of these songs in my head.
Another example of creative teaching was how my high school German teacher taught us the language. Rather than just making us read out of books or telling us the common name for grammatical situations, he made up easy to remember names for things and had us perform skits. He would say, " Don't add the is in that sentence, you don't need it. You don't want to kiss the llama do you?" Kissing the llama was his way of telling you to avoid adding extra words. It was so funny and creative that all the students remembered not to add extra words.
The best teachers are those who think outside-the-box to come up with a lesson plan. Creativity helps to engage the students and help them to learn better. I hope many more teachers will find creative ways to teach students, making school more enriching and more fun. So if I had one thing to tell a teacher that would help me and my fellow students learn better, it would be get creative.
