Big Brother is Watching by Jennifer M. - February 2015 Scholarship Essay
Reading allows people to explore a new world, or share very important life lessons that no one would think to give. If people really analyze books, they will be able to find that they somehow connect to real life. One major book that everyone needs to read, especially high school students is 1984 by George Orwell.
1984 explains that if we allow the government to control our lifestyles, then pretty soon our lives will turn into the lives like the book. It shows how terrible it is to give one person so much power. This book reveals how dictatorship is not necessarily the best thing. This book also shows that Ignorance is not always bliss and other concepts to help mold and warn the future that if we do not take care of society, then this will happen.
As I walk around, sometimes I wonder if our government has reached this far. Sometimes I look at a poster or camera and ask myself, “Is Big Brother Watching?.” This idea that we are always watched is already an issue. Therefore, high school students need to read this book because it connects with how government is today, and how it might become. I did not know anything about government, but when I read this book, it opened my eyes that I need to pay attention. This is an amazing book that will help students start to realize that they will be in charge in a few years, and in order to make good choices to better our world, they need to be informed.
