Education by Jennifer - November 2015 Scholarship Essay
Over 209.3 million people in the U.S. have a degree and this number will only increase with the push for higher education. Yet, despite these statistics this piece of paper has eluded my family for generations. Without a diploma, many people are pushed into a corner to what they can do. I’m most thankful for the fact that an education will not only help me, but also my family.
With a college education, I’ll have the necessary building blocks to create the life my parents have envisioned for me. My career choices won’t be restricted the way it has been for my parents. I won’t prove the statistics right by falling into the same path that parents had to take. Instead of living in the cycle of poverty, I’ll have the capability to break through it and make my parent’s sacrifices worthwhile. I’ll be creating a better life for myself and for those close to me.
Not only will I be changing my life, but also the lives of my siblings. I’ll have entire family full of college graduates. Having known my own experience with college, they’ll know college is an investment, not just an overpriced waste of time. Though it might seem like a drawback, I’ll also have four kids depending on me. They’ll have a helping hand throughout their entire senior year that I lacked when I was their age. If anything, we’ll probably compete to see which one of us can get the most letters behind our name.
A college degree will change my life. But not just mine, it’ll undoubtedly change the course of my siblings’ lives too. Unlike those in our family before us, we’ll have countless doors open to us and be able assist those close to use as well.
