Making school a better place by Jennifer - September 2023 Scholarship Essay

If I had the authority to change my school in a positive way, I would make several specific changes to improve the educational experience for all students. These changes would include a more inclusive curriculum, more personalized learning opportunities, and more support for mental health.

Firstly, I would make the curriculum more inclusive and diverse. Many students come from different backgrounds and have different interests, and I believe that the curriculum should reflect that. This means incorporating more diverse perspectives and stories into the curriculum, as well as including classes and activities that cater to different interests. For example, if a student is interested in music or art, there should be more opportunities for them to study those subjects.

Secondly, I would create more personalized learning opportunities for students. Not all students learn in the same way, and I believe that schools should cater to different learning styles. This could be accomplished through creating more small-group or individual learning opportunities, as well as using technology to create personalized learning plans for each student. By doing so, students would be able to learn at their own pace and in a way that works best for them.

Lastly, I would prioritize mental health and well-being in the school environment. Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, and schools should provide support for students who are struggling. This could include mental health counseling services, mindfulness exercises, and more wellness resources. By prioritizing mental health in the school environment, students would feel more supported and would be better equipped to handle the stresses of school and life.

In conclusion, if I had the authority to change my school in a positive way, I would focus on creating a more inclusive and diverse curriculum, more personalized learning opportunities, and more support for mental health. These changes would help ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed academically and personally, regardless of their backgrounds or learning styles.
