The Love Story of the Little Prince and the Only Rose in the Universe. by Jennifer - July 2013 Scholarship Essay
I was reading “The Little Prince” for my course in existentialist philosophy, and for a child's book, it struck me as an incredibly romantic story. The boy loves his flower. It's a rose like a million others, but he believes it is the only rose like it in the universe. Actually, it's not a very nice rose at all. It treats him like he's nothing one moment, the next, it acts like it needs him, but the boy is all alone, and he needs the rose too. The rose was cruel to him, and he left it eventually. Not without worrying about the rose. She assured him she was impervious to anything(with her 4 thorns). He found that there were a million other roses, but then he realized that there was really only the one rose; the one that had tamed him, and after being away for so long, he returned to his little planet to care for her. To keep her under glass, safe from the cold and the caterpillars. The boy tamed the fox, as well, but he left and the fox wept, but when he left he brought the wheat fields to life with his golden hair. I suppose, despite my wild streak, I've been tamed a few times myself. The sand and rain clouds and impervious roses have been brought to life for me.
I left my rose behind more than four years ago, though he perfumed my world, and I am now only six months away from returning to our tiny planet.
