Non Profit for Environmental Sustainability by Jennifer - February 2020 Scholarship Essay
As mankind continues into the future, increasingly drastic changes in the climate can be observed on Earth. Although climate change has naturally fluctuated over time, the majority of recent drastic climate change effects are due to never before seen increase in global greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. Pollution throughout the world is only making these matters worse. If the world is to continue to be habitable for humans, drastic measures will need to be taken on a global scale. If I were to start a nonprofit organization, I would choose to assist in environmental sustainability, starting on a local level, and optimistically reach national and international levels.
The goal of this nonprofit would be to work towards providing a sustainable environment for us, and for future generations on Earth. A non profit focusing on environmental sustainability could have various areas of involvement. These include littering, recycling, cleanup of oceans, and reducing the world's ecological and carbon footprint. Examples of existing nonprofits that do similar work include Green America, the Sierra Club, Environmental Defense Fund, and the Recycling Center. In many cases, many people do not recycle because they believe that they do not have the money, time, or resources in order to recycle. However, many of the already established recycling organizations are very affordable and take on most of the workload, leaving the customers with little to no work. In addition to recycling issues, the increasing amount of trash throughout Earth’s ecosystem is only reinforced by the lack of informed communities. This nonprofit organization could pair with other nonprofit organizations in order to further expand the ideas and have a larger platform.
Possible solutions to further environmental sustainability include establishing more centers, websites, or meetings to provide more information and resources on the effects of pollution and how it affects the change in our climate. The nonprofit could also inform on how to individually decrease ecological and carbon footprints. In addition to this, possible solutions toward combating the constantly increasing pollution issues include the creation of volunteer basis events to help to pick up trash, with incentives such as potlucks, bake sales, and more. In summary, this non profit would involve the community in efforts to combat Climate Change on not only a local level, but national and international levels to provide us with a sustainable future.
