Leadership Qualities of a Nobel Laureate by Jennifer - December 2018 Scholarship Essay

The Nobel Prize was established due to the will of Alfred B. Nobel. He left most of his estate in his will to award those who, in his own words, “shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" (Rowen). Each year, there are six prizes awarded for the following categories: peace, literature, physics, chemistry, physiology/medicine, and economic science (Rowen).
In order to preserve Alfred B. Nobel’s expectation of what the Nobel Prize would do for mankind, I believe it is important for the recipient to possess the qualities of vision and humility.
The recipient needs to have vision in order to drive their project forward for the right reasons. The Nobel laureate needs to be able to envision not only how the world will benefit from their project in the near future, but for years to come. This famous prize can be awarded to someone in any nationality. Therefore, the recipient needs to be able to perceive not only how their project will affect their direct community, but also on an international level.
Humility will allow the recipient to allow their project to take light over themselves. Nobel laureates are carefully chosen based on their prodigious accomplishments. The monetary award they receive may be spent in numerous ways, including donations to organizations and institutions, to further their research, etc. These are all admirable results of the Nobel Prize monetary award that benefit more than just the recipient.
An individual who possesses humility remains open to improvement. If the recipient has humility, they will not stop working to further their project and the benefits of their project because they have already been acknowledged for their current accomplishments.
There are many differences between the Nobel Prize recipients. They come from various cultural backgrounds and have differing nationalities. However, there are basic characteristics that many of them have, some being drive, honesty, respect, and of course vision and humility. For the reasons stated above, I find vision and humility to be the most valuable characteristics that a Nobel Prize recipient needs to possess. These are the qualities of a leader.
