Women Still Wanting Equality by Jennifer - August 2018 Scholarship Essay
For many years, woman have come together to take a stand against male dominant forces. They have taken advantage of a women’s capability to do the same job as a man or even work at all. Till this day there is a difference in pay that if a male and a female had the same job, even though a they both worked the same hours, and worked the same amount of days, females would get payed less. On my own personal pod cast I would like to talk about all the negative impacts women have to go through on a daily basis by men. How unfair is is to get a job the exact same as our opposite gender, yet we get paid a different amount. The pay gap is a serious matter that more people should be informed about and needs new laws to change the fact that women are still treated unequally, this is an act of discrimination towards women that needs to stop. The purpose of this matter personally for me, is to know that I can feel as equal and not feel like I am being stepped on all over by a male, it’s finally time for a change in this country for once.
Although many people have tried to dig deeper into this subject by saying women do not work as many hours or how much work experience as much as their male associates. Some statistics have shown that it could possibly be true there is no gap even when doing the math on how many hours one has done, according to June O’Neill “When the wages of men and women who share similar work experience and life situations are measured, the wage gap largely disappears. Reasons that the earnings disparity may appear bigger in some research, include the fact that many studies do not control the differences in years of work experience”. Even though through some extent June may be correct but according to Michael Eastman, the executive director of labor policy at the U.S Chamber of Commerce explains that “Whatever gap is not explained must be due to discrimination. An unexplained gap is simply that - it’s unexplained”. Taking out all of the factors on possible work experiences or comparing how many hours of work has been done, still is proven that there is an unexplainable percentage of women not getting paid equally like men are getting paid. As Michael Eastman has said this is an act of discrimination, which in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is being disobeyed by doing the complete opposite.
Yes, some bills have been trying to pass a law to help this situation, but have been rejected or vetoed by male United States representatives such as yourself. Even through the statistics and facts you can see that there is a major difference between the income of a male and a female worker, with the same job and etc. According to the GAO report “When we account for differences between male and female work patterns as well as other key factors, women earned on average, 80 percent of what men earned…” That is a twenty percent difference between the income, it may not seem like much but if you think about it and add up yearly, you can see how much money is not been equally given. Here is a more broken down and better view of the difference in the equal pay. According to census data cited by bill supporters”Women in 2006 made about 77 cents for every dollar earned by men, a difference that could amount to $2 million over a lifetime of earnings, retirement pay, and social security benefits”.Women have been treated unequally for hundreds of years, that statistic shows that we have barely changed, yes women can now vote but, are we as equal as a man? Are we going to finally pass bills and make a change?
Just think the young girls that are growing up today in this country have to deal with knowing that they can never be as “great” and be truly as equal as a man. Imagine that your daughter couldn’t be as powerful or taught that she could not be on the high pedestal that has been given to a man's ego. It’s about time females get the equal amount of income as a male. These facts and statistics that I have been reading and seeing make no sense, it gives me sorrow to even think that we can’t be paid equally, just because we are females! I want to see the hard working women that work for this country get paid back their twenty percent. I want your help to create a bigger attention to this cause and help me create a bigger voice to educate other people on this matter. More bills need to be passed and if they keep rejecting it, we will try harder to get it passed. This is not a situation to just brush off and throw into the back in your mind, this should be one of your top priorities to change as one of our representatives of the United States. Thank you for taking your time to read this and hopefully, soon enough that change will come.
