My Time in Scouts by Jennifer - May 2018 Scholarship Essay

My favorite volunteer position is as a Girl Scout Leader. I volunteer with the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta as a Brownie leader and service unit team trainer. As I Brownie leader, I work with girls in second and third grade. We learn life skills and social skills. My girls come from many different backgrounds and economic status. Using Girl Scout curriculum, called Journeys, the girls learn to care for themselves, each other, and their world. We teach the girls to "think like an engineer" and to step out of the box. I may be their leader, but I learn just as much from them! The girls teach me to be a better person, to love a little more, and to think so much more! Many girls do not have a positive role-model in their life, and I get to fill that position. Watching them achieve their goals brings a smile to my face! As a service unit team trainer, I get to train other adults in our area to be awesome leaders. These leaders get to go out and create a positive environment for girls in their troop. According to an article published by the Girl Scouts of the United States, seventy-three percent of the women in the Senate and 51 percent of the women in the House of Representatives are Girl Scout alums (https://www.girlscouts.org/en/about-girl-scouts/advocacy/portraits-in-leadership.html). Girls that participate in Girl Scouts have a higher chance of being in leadership positions because of the skills and confidence they get from the scouting program and leaders like me! I have been a Girl Scout leader for three years now and have had the ability play a positive role in their life! I can't wait to hear all about the changes they make in our world twenty years from now!
