Use Leadership Skills to Enjoy Your College Experience by Jennica - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Confidence, optimism, and determination are among the few characteristics needed to help any student pursuing an education. Life will throw hardships their way during their entire academic journey, so it is almost necessary to be prepared for any of those obstacles. By being a leader, one will surely be shown and taught these characteristics, which will be of great use to them during college. That is why leadership skills are necessary for college success.

Once in college, a student is basically on their own. There will be no more teachers to keep track of what they do and the decisions they make. As harsh as it sounds, not many people will care about what they do because they are too busy taking care of themselves. It will take a load of confidence in order to get through college life. Confidence is a key trait in being a leader, because it is needed in everyday life. It takes confidence to simply walk out of the house in public. It takes more confidence to speak to people. It takes confidence to do just about anything. In college, for example, one must be able to speak for themselves. If they have questions about anything, no one will speak for them; only they can help themselves. If they have group work to finish, they must have confidence to lead the group and share their opinions. Without this leadership trait, it will most likely be impossible to enjoy the “college experience.”

Having a positive attitude is proven to make lives happier and easier for people. College will probably be one of the hardest things people will have to accomplish in their lives. Finals here, midterms there, essays and projects everywhere. PLUS, it costs money; it’s not free anymore. It will be almost possible, but it is a must to remain positive during this time. Schoolwork and debts will be the big weights that will drag most students down. By remaining optimistic, one does not allow these situations to dictate their life or how they act. They will find the “silver lining” in everything and continue to pursue their goals. This is a leadership quality that is hard to perfect, but it is definitely needed for college success.

College not only comes with career education for students, but it also comes with many distractions and temptations. Determination is a major quality needed in order to come out on top. Along with confidence, determination is a major key to success. By continuing to push through no matter what, one will be able to accomplish all of their goals. It will be great preparation for when they graduate and enter the “real world.”

Going to college will be a difficult step in a student’s academic life, because nobody will be around to tell them what to do anymore. They will have to make decisions themselves, and they also have to learn from any mistakes they make. Various things will bring them down, whether it be schoolwork, loans and debts, people, etc., but they can push through all these obstacles through three of the main leadership qualities – confidence, optimism, and determination. These will be needed in order to go through everyday life while they attend classes and interact with other people. Leadership skills will be necessary for college success, no matter where a student chooses to go.
