What Education Means to Me by Jenna - October 2022 Scholarship Essay
I am the middle child of five girls and our parents have always valued the importance of getting a good education. Throughout my childhood I was moved around to numerous different schools to get the best education I could. Ever since I was little I knew it was important to my parents and through them I gained a love for learning. But getting an education hasn't just been learning about math and english. Through my schooling, I have learned many life lessons that will help me later in life. The first school I went to was a local public school in portland. I went there from kindergarten to first grade, and there I learned the importance of friends. While gaining a basic knowledge of the alphabet and how to count and read,I learned that a kind compliment or a helping hand can brighten someone's day and make you a friend that will last for ages. I continue to talk and sustain relationships with some of these friends.
The second school I went to was a private Christian school that I loved very much. I spent most of my school years going to this school and while I learned more about friends I also learned that sometimes friendships don't always work out how you plan. This school also taught me how to be professional at school and get the most out of learning. We were required to wear uniforms and do most of our work at home but it taught me how to be disciplined and I will always be grateful for that. My sixth grade year, my family was unable to find a house after selling ours too early and so we were forced to move into our friends basement until we could find ourselves a home. We weren't able to afford to send me our Christian school this year. I was sent to a charter school where I learned to make the best out of difficult situations.
This school was by no means easy to adjust too. I was upset that I had left friends behind and was angry with the situation. But through all this I was able to do well with the curriculum and make friends. And within four months we were able to move into a new house in which I could return to my old school the following year. These are just three of the six schools I have attended. Through all the moving I was still able to recognise that no matter the situation school and our education is important. To me education means learning lessons that will not only enlighten our minds but teach us important lessons about life. It means sticking it out through the hard times to accomplish goals that will make us happier people. It taught me about friends and how to face trials and showed me how to be disciplined and school. I will always be grateful for the wonderful education and life lessons I have gotten and I cannot wait to continue learning in college.
