Become a Hairstylist by Jemiah - August 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a young girl growing up in a low middle class area and with working parents, I had to be able to get myself up ready for school and to the bus stop all by myself. My mom would not have time to do my hair before leaving for work, so I had to make sure my hair was comb before leaving for school. I took a liking to being able to learn how to do my own hair when my parents did not have the time or money to pay someone to braid my hair. It was struggle trying to learn how to do my own hair, but I never gave up and I finally got the hang of it after a while. While in middle school I would braid some of my neighbor’s hair, some of my cousin’s hair and I would also practice on a mannequin. When I got to high school, that’s when I started thinking what I wanted to do after I graduated. Narrowing down exactly what I wanted to do was difficult because I liked doing a lot of things like hair, make up, lashes, decorating my room and the house for the different holidays/seasons, and I also liked watching criminal movies/shows.

When my dad started his own business, that made me want to work with him to learn more about being a business owner. I wanted to know what it will take for me to be able to achieve this goal once I graduated from high school and then college. While pursuing a degree in Business Administration, I hope to gain a comprehensive understanding of various business functions such as finance, marking, management, and apply them to my business plan on opening a hair salon. This knowledge will be crucial in helping me understand what is needed to run a successful business and making informed decisions as a business owner. Once I graduate from college with a masters degree, I plan on to going cosmetology school to get my license in doing hair.
