Purpose of an Education by Jelani - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
The purpose of an education is to give someone the skills to teach or perform certain responsibilities. An education can be self-taught, or learned from an institution in a particular expertise. Any aspect of education begins with one or more individuals studying or experimenting a subject where they eventually become an expert and are able to educate others on that specific topic. Any mathematician or scientist that came up with a formula worked extremely hard to educate themselves to come up with a conclusion for their theory or hypothesis. People are able to build on past educators’ work to provide more insight for future endeavors.
An education can also provide someone a certificate of completion like a diploma or certification. This is proof to others that you have enough knowledge to be considered competent in a specific field of study. However, I believe an education goes beyond receiving a certificate to represent one’s knowledge. It is imperative for individuals in an area of practice to continue educating themselves by reading books and articles on related research and topics.
Education will constantly grow and evolve. It is important for the human race to stay curious, and educate ourselves and others to unveil how magnificent the human mind can be. Theories have been proven wrong and information stated as “fact” has been discovered to be a “myth”. It is essential for all people seeking education, where applicable, to challenge what they have learned and provide a quality education for the future.
