Combatting Food Insecurity by Jeffrey - January 2024 Scholarship Essay
My grandfather's and my interests diverged often, but we found common ground in gardening. Together, we would cultivate Chinese vegetables like bok choy and dou miao. The scent of fresh earth and the wisdom my grandfather shared with every crop we planted created lasting impressions. However, when I moved from the suburbs to the city, the vibrant gardens of our past took a backseat to towering condos, making it impossible for me to continue this cherished tradition.
Yet, my connection to the garden remained unshaken. The act of growing, nurturing, and sharing food I’d harvested had always been a vital part of my identity. It not only brought me closer to my grandfather, but it also introduced me to the profound significance of sustenance and community. While I wasn’t able to tend to a garden anymore, I found a way to feed my passion. Volunteering with Deliverance Children's Ministry, I participated in bi-weekly food drives, connecting with the community through the universal language of food.
In a city where the bustling landscape overshadowed the tranquility of gardens, the importance of food became even more evident. As COVID-19 swept through our community, the rising food insecurity shook many households. I witnessed the stark reality of food scarcity when we started running out of food to give at our food drives. It was a situation I’d never encountered before, and it demanded immediate action.
During one of the food drives, I overheard a 7-year-old child asking his mother about the process of making food and where to find more. While his mother shushed him, this innocent inquiry left a striking mark on me. I couldn't help but wonder, "How can we expect a brighter future when so many are unaware about something as fundamental as where their food comes from?" This moment ignited my determination to combat this issue.
A local solution that I devised started with identifying a barren plot of land, overrun by weeds. With the unwavering support of local organizations providing us with supplies like soil and mulch, our community came together to turn this neglected space into a thriving urban garden. We shared knowledge, worked side by side, and created bonds that strengthened our resolve. This garden, once a symbol of neglect, now thrives as a testament to what can be achieved when a community unites for a common cause. It's not just a source of sustenance; it's an educational resource and a beacon of hope for challenging times.
After transforming the plot into a thriving urban garden, I realized that this journey was not only about revitalizing the land but also about rediscovering my potential. It reinforced my belief in the power of community and taught me that, like the crops we nurtured, personal growth takes time and patience.
My journey continues as I collaborate with Rutgers University to turn this urban garden into an official 4-H STEM site, inspiring the next generation with the same passion for learning and growth that my grandfather ignited in me.
