Thirst For Knowledge by Jazmyne - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

The word I chose to describe why I want to attend college is fulfillment. Fulfillment can be defined as the achievement of something desired, promised or predicted. I feel that attending college will help me to improve myself and be able to discover just a little more about who I am. I will change a lot, grow a lot, and let go of a lot. I will be able to make my own decisions and find various ways to motivate myself. It will also be a time for internal exploration as I continue to discover my likes and dislikes and my strengths and my weaknesses. Going to college will help me fulfill my intellectual curiosity as I learn to use my environment as a resource. Ultimately, my goals in college are to gain the skills that I need to lead a successful and productive life and, to expand my knowledge of the world while using that knowledge to broaden the sphere of my comfort zone. My greatest desire is to be intellectually and academically challenged and the quickest way to gain all that I seek is through attending college.

I have struggled with identifying what actually fulfilled me personally. I thought the things I liked slightly more than others were the things that personally fulfilled me. It was not until I sat down and asked myself "What are you passionate about?" that I began to give such deep thought about personal fulfillment. I would describe it as a sense of feeling complete and satisfied in any area or activity. I discovered that learning something new is what sparks my interest the most. To be personally fulfilled in anything brings forth assurance and confidence.

Not only is attending college going to fulfill me but also my mother as well. My mother attended college but she did not complete it. Attending school will fulfill her in knowing that she has instilled the importance of college in me. She will get to see that everything she has done has been worth it. I am the first person in my family that is going to college straight from high school and while there is a lot of pressure with this, it is also very rewarding. Moreover, satisfaction for my family in addition to my mother is an extensive reason as to why I wish to attend a university. I want to be an example for all of my nieces and nephews, reassuring them that even though the process will be challenging and stressful, it'll be beneficial to your future. I want to show them that it will greatly assist you in being able to fulfill your dreams. It will make them easier to achieve; but first, the fulfillment begins with me.
