Fashion Designer in the Making by Jazmine - August 2018 Scholarship Essay
A girl will go through an endless amount of stores, looking for one article of clothing to fit her right, without the inclusion of discomfort. Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand the complexity of female bodies and how we range in various shapes and sizes. However, like this girl, I have been in the same situation. Looking for one pair of jeans to fit my smaller waist, big hips, and big butt, I have felt the pain of not being able to conform my body into the ‘right’ body type. Every girl I know understands the struggle.
But it shouldn’t be considered a struggle. Nor should it ruin one’s image or self-confidence and turn into a self-deprecating joke. Like many other women and young girls, I have given my own body shame and underappreciation; not only did I not find my size but I failed to discover my true beauty and the self-confidence I needed. Clothes should empower you, make you feel like your flying in the air with your hair flowing in the wind. It should conform to your body and not the other way around. Women and girls should feel a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the bodies they have; they shouldn’t regret the form they don’t possess nor should they deny themselves of self-love and a healthy mentality of their own being.
With this conflict reoccuring generation after generation, I aspire to pursue the major of fashion design and entrepreneurship at Drexel University’s Westphal College of Art and Design. As I dedicate time to my portfolio, I strive to produce designs that express my mission to eliminate self-deprecation and reproduce empowerment. By providing a selection of fashion sketches, drawings, paintings, garments, and mood boards, my dreams of helping other girls in the world with insecurities and idiosyncrasies will become reality with collegiate acceptance.
Therefore, Drexel University can give me the opportunity to flourish into a fierce and influential fashion designer for women and girls of all shapes and sizes. With confidence in my capabilities, I can make the world happier and more liberated one thread at a time.
