Expressive Writing by Jazmin - May 2014 Scholarship Essay
The best piece of educational advice I received, was given to me by my English professor while I was a freshmen in college. She told me not to fear expressing myself in my writing, and to feel confident enough to write bold statements in my papers. Given I had enough evidence or knowledge of a particular topic, I was free to share my point of view and ideas of how it affects the average American; as this was an English class geared towards the United States and the rights and responsibilities of it’s citizens. Her advice left me feeling absolutely empowered and ready to take on intriguing writing topics.
During my first semester at the University of Southern Maine, I was very careful when it came to voicing my opinions, to avoid them being perceived as too assertive in my assignments. My biggest worry was that my professor would not agree with my point of view or if what I was saying could be viewed as controversial. Over the four months of the semester, I blossomed and went from being an overly timid writer to innovative thinker and eloquent writer. Not only was it uplighting to achieve higher grades in my English and Honors Medicine and Literature class, but it felt wonderful to unleash the knowledge I have gained through personal experience and research; without feeling I would be harshly or unfairly judged.
I would recommend anyone, no matter what major they are in or plan to go in to, to educate themselves on the topic they are writing about then allow their own opinions to form and creativity to flow. Freely expressing oneself, as long as it is not offensive or incredibly racy, helps you to grow as a student and a young adult. A major part of the high education experience is to voice opinions, think outside of the box, and stay curious about yourself and the world.
