Make It Worth It by Jaymohn - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
A senior quote is one final phrase that represents you and something for people you graduated with to remember you by. Your senior quote is supposed to hold a meaning that you value and is very personal. My senior quote is "Always Make It Worth It." That quote is very deep to me and meaningful to me, it has pushed me and helped me maintain focus on my goals and what I strive to be. I came up with it my sophomore year of high school right after I was cut from the JV basketball team. I was crushed and very bitter about myself and life in general . I just wanted to give up on everything, I was mentally drained and was dealing with depression. I guess my mom had told my grandma about how I was doing, and going about things and she insisted on me going to see her. I went over to her house and she had a heart to heart moment with me and she understood how I felt and told me everything's okay, there is up and downs to the world we live in and there is always conflicts in fairy tales. She told me something I’ll keep with me for the rest of my life: “Jaymohn, you are an amazing kid. You are special. Your life is going to be okay, make your life worth it baby.”
Those last few words she told me, really stuck with me. It swirls around my mind with everything I do now from taking a big test, making purchases, to even tying my shoes. She told me this when I was sophomore and now I am a senior in high school still applying the same phrase to things that I do and I even got it tattooed on me because it means so much to me, and it has gotten me through times where I didn’t think I could keep going.
At this time in my life Ii’m facing senior situations such as college applications, scholarship apps, ACT prep and the actual test, college visits etc. and I just got to stay on my two feet the whole time because I actually want to do things like go to college but sometimes I have those type of thoughts that aren’t positive and I end up putting myself down but then I look down at my arm, and remember what my grandma told me. It take those thoughts sometimes to recognize who you are and that you have only one life so you can only do one thing or live in pity. That one thing is to make life worth it. You live one time only, that’s something not just my Grandma has stressed to me but also my Dad. My Dad expresses to me frequently that in his life he didn’t make the best of decisions, and he wants me to strive for something positive and go out and experience life in the fullest because he didn’t get to see all the options I could potentially see. This is very similar to the message my Grandma had told me, they just want me to experience life, sure it’s going to be downfalls but there is still going to be life and you always have to make the best of that, even if you are dealing with issues, if you make your life worth it life is going to reward you.
