Once You Start It's Harder to Quit by Jaylin - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

One piece of advice that I would give an incoming high school freshman is to NEVER get into the habit of being lazy. Becoming lazy to me is equivalent to trying a drug for the first time. You give it a shot one time, and you fall in love with the feeling. It then becomes the natural method to pursue when you just don’t care anymore because the enjoyment level the first time was astronomical. Some people say being lazy is fine as long as you handle your business, but I say being lazy can lead to far more problems than you want rather than being consistently productive.

Now, don’t get me wrong, having to deal with school and the package that comes with it takes a tremendous amount of work, and being lazy tends to happen, but the goal is to not become lazy but occasional be lazy. You are going to have those days where you just feel like doing nothing and that's ok, it’s called being fatigued. The moment that you let fatigue, stress, and possible outcomes take over your mental state is the moment where you are letting laziness set in. It’s easy to put off that English assignment that is only 5% of your grade because you think it is busy work, but it’s hard to pass that English test that corresponded with that assignment that is 40% of your grade. Letting one assignment by, opens the door for a flock of assignments to fly by without you ever noticing, and this is what I want to keep you away from.

Being a freshman means taking on new goals and responsibilities and also starting a new year of your life. The last thing you want to do is to start off on the wrong foot from developing the symptoms of laziness at an early age. Don’t give this contagious drug the opportunity to mess up your life, or bring your goals to a halt. Once you become lazy, it is ten times harder to get back on track, so just stay the course and NEVER let the perks of being lazy consume you. If you never start, you never have to quit.
