What Does Education Mean to You?

Education means a lot to me. I am very grateful that I’m able to wake up every morning and go to school. Not a lot of students have the opportunity to go to school and that could be for many reasons. To name a few, it could be for medical reasons, it can have something to do with family and not being able to have enough funding or no funding at all to go to school.

I am the first person in my family to graduate from high school and the first person in my family to attend college. I am a first-gen student. I used to look at that as a major setback because my parents did not attend college but now that I am a young adult and understand, I realize that I have the opportunity to be successful and continue my education.

Ever since I was in kindergarten, I was always excited for the next day, and that was to go to school. I am currently a sophomore at Texas Southern University In Houston Texas and I have the opportunity to learn something different every single day and take advantage of that. Every time I learn something new, it prepares me for the future.

Education is important to me because it helps me pursue my dream which is Journalism. I chose Journalism as my major alongside my future career because I have always had a passion for writing ever since I was in the 4th grade, anything that comes to mind I make a story out of it. Also, I want to draw people in with the information I give them about any topic. The classes that I’m currently taking are teaching me what I need to know about my major and the steps I need to take to be successful in my field.

Consequently, education helps build my critical thinking, I’m able to think more and understand. In my opinion, education is not always about going to school to learn and get a diploma or degree, I can apply what I learn in school to life in general.
