Dinner on the Gogh by Jayla - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
If I were able to have dinner with any historical figure, I would absolutely choose Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh’s ability to persevere and not allow his mental health issues stand in his way make his brilliant thought, emotional outlook, intricate problems in life, and his artwork all the more outstanding. Van Gogh was a very troubled man, yet he overcame his troubles long enough to create artwork that would even make his own existence a piece of art.
Van Gogh was brilliant, though he had many mental issues. He suffered from depression, anxiety, paranoia, and even bipolar disorder. With these disorders, he was a very deep and thoughtful man. I personally love his quote, "The way to know life is to love many things." He was crazed by love and struggles, and in the end he took his own life. Although he did commit suicide, he still lives on through his art. He has these flawlessly intricate paintings, like Starry Night and Irises. These paintings are so different with their strange, yet beautiful patterns.
I would love to ask him about his inspiration and why he’s so miserable. I would tell him that one day, people will stare at his artwork in awe and interest. That he shouldn’t take his life because one day he will be envied and appreciated. This is why I would choose to have dinner with Vincent Van Gogh.
