Recipe for Success by Jayden - December 2017 Scholarship Essay
When I get a project my first goal is pay close attention to the due date and then work the project into my schedule. Assignments with closer due dates typically take my top priority, though this will change if the project demands more time to complete while the assignments can be done quickly. Unless I have something that I need to complete first, I will begin the project as soon as I get home from school.
Once I begin the project, I take all of the requirements and place them in the document I am working in, removing them as I achieve them. If projects do not involve me working in a document, such as when making a poster, then I will still create a checklist and keep it up on my computer as I work.
When working alone, I will typically work for twenty minutes at a time and then take five-to-ten-minute breaks. The reason for such a difference in time is the result of different project difficulties. For projects that I can do with relative ease, I take only five-minute breaks mostly to rest my hands or to get snacks. In the event of having to complete a frustrating and difficult project, I double my break times so that I have a longer window of relaxing. Knowing myself, if I try to force myself to work without interruption, I will get frustrated in the middle of the project and begin to procrastinate. So, slightly longer breaks are a necessity for me to finish work sooner instead of later.
Lastly, if I have to present the project, I will practice what I will say as much as possible. I have had a great deal of speaking problems in my life so attempting to present something without rehearsing what I am going to say will cause me to mumble and stutter. After presenting topics that I have practiced, I often receive comments on how confident and well-spoken I am. Doing all of these activities for a project is my recipe for success.
