The Beauty of Community by Javier - December 2019 Scholarship Essay
Last year, during my junior year in high school, I decided to be a part of a community group called Omicron Society. Being a member of this group completely changed my perspective as to how I view others and society. Firstly, one of the things members do in this group is that we help elementary school children who struggle with their academics. Generally, the children we help live in communities where there is not much aid and guidance, and consequently, they always seem to be overjoyed when they see us. The reason why helping children with schoolwork has really impacted me is because in helping them, I managed to see something I had never really seen. Ultimately, I realized that every action, even the little ones such as helping with small homework assignments, could be meaningful in a person’s life in the long run and in this scenario, it could change a person’s path into successful story. In addition, the smiles and the willingness of the children that I helped and continue to help give me a sense of motivation to continue helping them because to me, theses smiles are exemplifying their spirits of striving to move forward in life and I want to do everything possible to help them achieve that dream. Another service that we perform is that we visit elder people in retirement homes. In this service, I am astonished by the idea of how a simple action of just being present could stimulate a smile and bring happiness to a person’s life. For instance, at my first serving at the retirement home, what I witnessed was truly incredible to the point where I got goosebumps. When we were being introduced to some of the elders, some of them began to cry of joyfulness and others quickly rushed to give us hugs. I noticed that without them knowing us, we were able to make them happy and this illustrates the beauty of community. Humans are meant to be in constant community and should always strive be there for one another especially when circumstances get rough.
