Creating Opportunities for the Next Generation by JaTorrie - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

If I could design a project to improve my school or community, I would create a program called “Pathways to Stability and Success.” This initiative would focus on supporting students and families facing housing insecurity, financial hardship, and limited access to educational resources. Growing up, I experienced many of these challenges myself. My family and I struggled with homelessness, moving from couch to couch and relying on the support of relatives and friends. Those experiences taught me that many students face obstacles outside the classroom that can make it difficult to succeed academically. I want to create a program that helps students overcome those barriers and reach their full potential.
The program would provide resources such as school supplies, tutoring, mentorship, college preparation workshops, and access to community support services. Students would be paired with mentors who could guide them through academic challenges, help them set goals, and encourage them to stay focused on their future. The program would also connect families with organizations that provide assistance with housing, food, employment, and other essential needs. By addressing both educational and personal challenges, the program would help create a stronger foundation for student success.
One important component of the project would be financial literacy and career development. Many students, especially those from underserved communities, do not always have access to information about budgeting, saving money, applying for scholarships, or preparing for a career. Through workshops and guest speakers, students would learn practical skills that could help them become financially independent and better prepared for adulthood. The program would also introduce students to different career paths and provide opportunities to connect with professionals in fields such as business, education, healthcare, and public service.
In addition, I would organize community service projects that encourage students to give back to their neighborhoods. Activities such as food drives, neighborhood cleanups, school beautification projects, and volunteer events would allow students to make a positive impact while developing leadership skills. Service has played a major role in my life, and through my work with the Young and Prosperous Foundation, the Aaron Price Fellows Program, and other community organizations, I have learned that positive change happens when people come together to support one another.
This project is meaningful to me because I understand what it feels like to face uncertainty and hardship. Programs such as Upward Bound, the Young and Prosperous Foundation, and the Aaron Price Fellows Program provided me with opportunities, mentorship, and encouragement that helped me believe in myself. Without those experiences, I would not be the leader I am today. I want to create a program that offers the same support to other students who may be struggling.
Ultimately, “Pathways to Stability and Success” would focus on creating opportunities, building confidence, and helping students achieve their goals. I believe that every student deserves access to resources and support, regardless of their background or circumstances. By investing in young people and their families, we can strengthen our schools, improve our communities, and create a brighter future for the next generation.
