Take A Class So You Don't Crash by Jason - January 2023 Scholarship Essay

Do you remember learning how to drive? Who taught you the basics? In some states and schools a driver’s education course is required for high school students. “Only one in five high school students have taken a driver’s education course before taking their driving exams.” I believe that a driver’s education course should be required for all students in high school. The three reasons why I believe all students should enroll in a driver’s education course are: to have safer roads and drivers, more confident drivers with a better understanding of laws and rules of the road, and some students do not have the resources to be taught at home.
Driver’s education teaches defensive drivers and rules of the road. Driver’s education teaches driver safety in different weather situations. There are many discussion scenarios that the instructor and their students can work out together. Some of these situations are times when drivers need to act and/or think quickly. Experience from a driving instructor can help increase safer roads and drivers.
Driver’s education teaches basic knowledge of car maintenance and rules of the road. Students will increase their confidence through practice. Students will have a better understanding of their vehicle and how it operates. This course will help students be prepared to take the written and driving exams at the Department of Motor Vehicle Transportation.
I was fortunate to have my parents help me learn the rules of the road and take me for driving hours, however some students may not have a parent that has a driver’s license or time to take them driving. That is why giving students the opportunity to learn to drive at school is only fair and equal to all students.
“A new study that followed more than 150,000 teen drivers over eight years has found that driver's education significantly reduces crashes and traffic violations among new drivers.Young drivers who have not completed driver's education are 75 percent more likely to get a traffic ticket, 24 percent more likely to be involved in a fatal or injury accident and 16 percent more likely to have an accident, the study showed.” I believe that all students should be required to take a driver’s education course at school. This will result in safer drivers and roads, more knowledgeable and confident drivers, and students having a course with an instructor.
