The Realm of Computers by Jason - April 2019 Scholarship Essay

The Realm of Computers
Submitted by: Jason Bradley April 10, 2019
As a returning student seeking a career change, I’ve ran into many academic challenges along the road to success. Likely the most difficult has been adjusting to using computers and understanding how programs operate. The only way to overcome this challenge has been constant patience, hard work and dedication.
The first hurdle was to address no internet service at my home. That meant no time to practice using a computer on my time. To counter that dilemma meant more time at college for internet access. I began to spend many hours after class studying, then getting familiar with computers by simply using them. During that time, I also became comfortable with my ability to start searching different websites for research on writing projects related to English composition courses I was enrolled in. Understanding how to navigate through cyberspace was exceptionally challenging but became easier the further along I progressed.
Another situation which caused the most difficulty for me using computer programs was that most assignments must be submitted through Canvas. That is a program my college uses as part of its curriculum. Some instructors insist that students use it extensively. There are no tutorials available to explain how it operates. It was all cause and effect for me. The only way to understand the program was to use it and learn from my mistakes which took constant patience and effort.
After my confidence grew, I began using Word 2016. The many hours I’ve worked with that program has allowed my typing ability to improve immensely. After writing lengthy essays while using Word and internet for research, my computer knowledge and skills again moved up another step. Therefore, I enrolled in a communications course that required using Adobe In-Design. Constant time and effort navigating that program helped me to become reasonably proficient with it. Dedication helped me to eventually achieve success.
I have now acquired the ability to use computers along with many programs both efficiently and effectively. This was never a consideration for me two years ago before I returned to school. Without constant perseverance, hard work and dedication I would have likely failed. My objectivity allowed me to overcome this major hurdle and achieve great success that will last a lifetime and allow me to obtain future goals I have set.
