Discuss a teacher or mentor who has had a significant impact on your educational journey. by Jasmine - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
Mrs. Gibbs was far more than just a teacher; she was a mentor, and in many ways, a second mother to me. In high school, I was obnoxious, rebellious, and overconfident. My relationship with my mother was strained, leaving me without the support and understanding I desperately needed. Mrs. Gibbs became the steady presence I could rely on, someone who truly listened and made me feel seen. At home, my struggles were often dismissed or overlooked, but Mrs. Gibbs created a haven where I could express my emotions without fear of judgment. Countless afternoons, I stayed in her classroom after school to vent my frustrations with boys, the chaos of my home life, or the overwhelming pressures of school. Every tear I shed was met with sympathy, not rejection. She never judged me for my mistakes or complaints. Instead, she offered guidance that was both wise and practical. Her patience, kindness, and unwavering support were a lifeline during one of the most challenging times in my life. I have great respect and care for her, and I am deeply grateful for the role she has played in shaping who I am today. Thanks to Mrs. Gibbs's support and guidance, I finished school with a GPA above 3.0, attended an HBCU, and became the first to go to college in my family.
