Beyond the Classroom: A More Individualized Approach by Jasmine - June 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Jasmine Kremer, and I am a swimmer and student pursuing a degree in Exercise Science at Gardner-Webb University in Rural North Carolina. Throughout the years, I've had many different kinds of tutoring, including French, Math, English, and ACT Standardized testing, all of which I have benefited from. Tutoring allows you to have more hands-on experience with learning that's individualized specifically for you, whereas the classroom approach is more generalized. As a student with occipital neuralgia and dyslexia, learning can be challenging, especially when you are a slower learner than average.
Throughout my many tutoring sessions, I have learned in the way I know what's best for me, and I have had a tutor challenge me in the best ways so I can learn as much as possible. In a classroom, I find it challenging to keep up with lectures sometimes, so having a tutor has been beneficial in clarifying topics I have missed. I didn't have to feel wrong about where I was compared to anyone else because I only focused on my goals. In my learning, I dedicated extra time to topics that I found challenging, so I was incredibly successful when I added this to my academic routine. If done right, tutoring should make you feel more confident in your abilities and know that finding challenging areas for your learning can make you a more efficient learner. Self-reflection is huge because it will help you see what components to focus on in your academic knowledge.
Going into my senior year of my undergraduate degree, I will work as a tutor at the university. My main focus will be anatomy and exercise science classes because they relate to what I want to do. My goal is to bring confidence to my students and know that taking extra time to learn something better is not a weakness. It's an opportunity for self-reflection to build your strengths and strive for greatness.
