A Memorable Lesson by Jasmine - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

The purpose of going to school is to learn and get an education. We learn all types of things at school that we are expected to remember like English and History. I have learned plenty at school over the years. My teachers have worked very hard to teach me everything  I needed to know to prepare for the real world but the most interesting lesson I have ever been taught in a classroom cannot be found in a textbook. It cannot be found through research. It can only be found through experience and wisdom. I learned this lesson from my seventh grade teacher Ms.Sellars. The most interesting thing I have learned in a classroom is that you are not promised success in life. You are going to experience some failures and it is okay to let them knock you down but you are only a failure if you let them keep you down.

This lesson is by far the most interesting and memorable because it had more of an impact on me than anything I have ever been taught in school. I went through a number of changes in my life and every time things seemed bleak I would remember what she taught me and I turned out just fine. Those two little sentences has gotten me through some of the biggest obstacles imaginable. Her words showed me who I was and what I can really do.

In Ms. Sellars classroom I learned something I have carried with me and applied to my life. She showed me that I would get knocked down in life but I was just as capable of getting back up. She introduced me to the inner strength I never knew I had. In her classroom I was not just learning about average school subjects. I was learning about the most important subject of all. Life.

These type of topics were typical in her classroom. She always taught me lessons that could be used beyond school walls. She taught me things that I could apply to myself. Ms. Sellars was more than a teacher who gave us assignments. She was a practically my life coach. She showed me things and opened my eyes to reality.
