My Dream by Jasmine - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

Entrepreneurship has changed from many hobby driven businesses on the side to a resourceful method to become your own boss. Many people are turning to entrepreneurship to live out their dreams to create something that others are willing to buy. I am currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Business Management with the dream to become an entrepreneur. With my bachelors degree, I will be better equipped to succeed in a very ubiquitous field that many people are trying to get into now. But with this degree, I will be properly trained to enter the profession and ultimately allow my dreams to grow year by year.

Since I was a child, I always found starting businesses to be exciting. The thrill that came with using my imagination to create a product that others enjoyed always gave me a sense of desire to radiate my love for a product onto someone else. I started my first business at seven. Although it only lasted for a couple of years. The joy that lit on my face when someone brought a bracelet from me still resonates to this day. Like most seven year olds, making my own money was thrilling. Having that sense of independence made me eager to expand my palate on all the things that I could create. But even more, the independence allowed me to explore and use my imagination. Something that most successful business owners excel in.

But as I got older and started two more businesses. The idea of my businesses being based on my hobbies became less exciting as I wanted my businesses to become more than just a hobby. I felt that I was limiting myself to just be another small business in my town. When I knew that large corporations and businesses were possible. My limits for it to just be a hobby dimmed and I became even more eager to create something unstoppable.

Originally, I wanted to just test the waters as many would say. And see if I could start another business that would be more than just a side job. But I quickly realized that if I wanted to create successful businesses. I would need to work harder than most. While attending Fisk University was my dream school since my fourth grade graduation. I didn’t know if being a first generation college student was in the works for me. But like in my younger years, my imaginative spirit allowed me to embark on a journey that I had never seen or experienced. And I am so glad that I did.

In my freshman year, I entered into my first business pitch competition. Even though I had no professional experience in business, I still felt the desire to try and get my first pitch out there. Although I didn’t win the competition, I stepped one foot through the door and tried something that I had never done before. And the experience led me to be more eager to succeed in this field. In doing so, it led me to also focus more time perfecting my marketing skills. I began honing my skills in social media marketing and developing my two social media pages. I really enjoy social media marketing and I believe it will play a huge role in the future businesses that I create.

Due to the rise of social media and virtual promotion for businesses. I felt that learning how to properly run a page will allow me to learn how to market and build more sales for my products in business. Since starting my music media page, I have gained over 16k followers on Instagram and one brand deal on TikTok. The best part of running my pages is that I can always use my innovative and adventurous mind to create new ideas and content that my following will enjoy. Everytime I post, I learn more about analytics and the background of running something. Which all tie with the necessary tools needed to become a successful entrepreneur. This passion of mine has only developed more and become a motivator in my life to succeed. Because of my educational plan and entrepreneurial spirit, I know I can achieve it and eventually reach my dream.

I am very excited to continue my dreams of becoming an entrepreneur that will one day create a business that many people will love across the world. After obtaining my bachelors in business, I will start looking for places to grow a business as well as have a job to help with the funds to launch my business. After I reach my financial goals, I will launch my business and provide training for other individuals in my community who want to start their own business. With my degree, I hope to help my community through classes for those who couldn't get a degree. In hopes to create more diversity and inclusion in the field. With the help of this scholarship, my dream to become a successful entrepreneur that turned a hobby into a lifestyle will be closer to fruition.
