A Positive Mind by Jasmine - September 2014 Scholarship Essay

The skill that I believe is most important to success in college is a positive attitude. In high school, my family and I hit many rough patches financially, which cost us a home to live in during November. For several weeks my mother, brother, and I were homeless and depressed; my brother and I spent many days sobbing over what we had lost while out mother cried with guilt and hopelessness in her heart. Despite all of this though, I still had high hopes for the future.

I pushed myself to the limit in my school work, determined to fight for the future that my family and I deserved. With this new-found hope I had, I continued with my education and managed to pass all of my classes with A’s and B’s in my honors classes as well as ace all of my upcoming exams, being the only person in my school to pass the Cambridge IGSCE Literature exam and score the highest on the SAT English examination in the school. A positive mind is vital to succeeding in college because it can help students cope with stress; without it, many students will find college nerve-racking.
