The Importance of Continued Learning by Jasmine - March 2018 Scholarship Essay

As a student grows older and begins to pass through their classes, many of them will naturally develop the sense of how important school may be. Adults are always reminding them that the information will be used later on in life, that it is necessary in order to move onto a career and that life will continue to grow more challenging. Some students take the path of taking their education seriously, while others slowly stray away from it. However, stressing the importance of an education to a second grade student may help them to understand sooner that they should be working towards that further education. Some ways to implement the significance of a further education to a second grader include explaining what they are preparing for during elementary, middle and high school and how it would benefit them in the future.
As a second grader, the student may not understand why they have to go through about 12 years of school in a general sense. They know that their guardian requires them to get up at 7am, 5 days a week with a couple breaks in between and that is about it. It would be important to explain to them that they have to learn; for instance, one may point out how their parents know much more than the child. It may be a phenomenon to such a young child that their parent can answer a question without any hesitation. This is a place in which one may explain to them that these answers came from attending all of these years of schooling. Additionally, it may be a place to explain that they took the extra few years to attend a school that is called a “college” or “university”; attending this college or university gives them the opportunity to learn even more stuff about the stuff that they care about. For instance, this could be the place to mention a career.
Furthering one’s education gives them a vast opportunity for more career options. This can be explained to a child by providing their parents, or even their own teachers, as examples. To be more specific, using a teacher as an example may be beneficial. It can be pointed out that if their teacher had not furthered their education, they would not be able to be a teacher; that college or university is what prepared them and taught them all they had to learn to be able to explain things to their students. It could be helpful to ask the student specifically what they see themselves doing in the future, even if it is not entirely serious yet. Many children see themselves being teachers, doctors, veterinarians, or astronauts; they can be asked questions directed to that career. If they do not know the answer, which they likely would not, it can be pointed out that it is something they could learn through furthering their education.
There are several ways to explain to a second grader that a further education is important, such as helping them first understand why they are going to school and then how it can benefit their future. The information can be brought to simple enough terms that they would understand that it is something that can teach them new things. While it may not stick after a day or so, it can always be brought back into their memory when they are older and beginning to understand the significance by themselves. It would offer them the opportunity to think more seriously about such an intense process, which can ultimately lead to a less stressful time.
