Diversity by Jasmine - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

I am the type of person who has rarely strayed too far from home. I stayed in my house not seeking adventure as I should have. I never tried to reach out and grow through my own experience, just others. Now I am at a point where that has to change. I am at a point where I want to change. I am at the point where I am changing. I come from a small rural area where it's all about traditions. Traditions are not bad, but sometimes, they can be suffocating. Over the summer I was able to to get away from the suffocation. I participated In Governor’s School. From there I gained knowledge about the diverseness of North Carolina. I was able to experience the different cultures, learning experiences and different beliefs based on this small group of people. Diversity is something I value because I am tired of the same old thoughts and opinions. I want something new and creative. Something expressive. Something that is out of the ordinary. Something that can help influence me.
While I do come from a close-minded area, I do believe that I can contribute an amount of diversity myself. Diversity is about the difference in people and their lives, and I being from a different setting than others, can bring in some different ideas and opinions. That is what I look for in college. These different views. Different personalities. I am tired of the same attitudes and ignorance in the area that I live. I want to get away from that and express myself without judgment. I want to be listened too rather than ignored. College will offer me a chance to learn about different people. Their way of life. Their speech. Their everything. That's what I look forward to in college. I'm ready for something different.
