The right words - communication in education by Jasmeen - February 2023 Scholarship Essay
Effective communication is the most significant skill for a successful education system. When teachers, students, and administrators create an atmosphere that promotes open and meaningful conversations, the learning environment formed is conducive. The right words can often be tricky to express, and regret or hesitation can often be felt after a conversation. To ensure meaningful exchanges between students, clear and effective communication is paramount.
Students have an active role, from staying on top of assignments and expressing themselves clearly in times of confusion, to receiving feedback from their peers. In addition, they should understand that shared values create shared meaning. Through practice, this skill is gradually learned and improved upon. Outside of the classroom, communication helps students seek, network and build meaningful relationships. It gives them the power to express their ideas and make their voices heard, shaping their future through their confidence.
Teachers have a responsibility to create a safe and supportive atmosphere in the classroom. Creative tools and strategies employed (ex. Socratic seminars) ensure effective feedback that can help students grow. This allows students to embrace their curiosity and deepen their understanding of subject matter they find interesting or relevant to their culture.
The power of communication in the classroom cannot be underestimated, as it has an impact on students' future prospects. Being able to communicate effectively and confidently gives students the opportunity to be heard and take control of their own destinies. Though it may be easily overlooked, communication is the most important soft skills in any educational system when practiced effectively. It provides students with a tool to deeper understand the world they’ll inherit.
