My Decision by Jarelle - March 2020 Scholarship Essay

I’m not someone who always knows what they want. Not because of an apathetic trait. On the contrary, it’s mostly because I care too much about the decisions I make or will have to make. How they will come back to me in the future. In short, I’m the type of person who thinks twice about something I said to someone in a conversation from a few days ago. With every choice I make it’s another step further into my future as to who I will be.

Despite this, I am certain that going to college will be the best decision I have made for myself. I want to continue furthering my education so I don’t just have a job, but a career. Pursuing a career in the Criminal Justice and Psychology department is the path I choose to follow with a strong heart. Being in a Leadership class for the majority of my time in high school has taught me about being a leader that can understand the basic and safety needs that others don’t have. I want to help create a safer environment by learning more about people with my career.

I am devoted to my decision primarily for my family. Being a first-generation student is a proud accomplishment I will achieve to dedicate to them, because they have made multiple sacrifices in order to raise me and provide me with the best education, even if it meant at the cost of their own. Giving this accomplishment back to my family is a way for me to show my unbound gratitude and love for their incredible support. Giving them more financial stress is not something I want to do, especially towards my mother, who as a widow has done her best to raise me with good morals and teach me to show kindness to everyone. She is my push to make a name for myself. It’s my goal to chase after my career on my own, because while my mother, family, and teachers set the path for me, I have to continue moving forward to make my own decisions for a good future.
