For those students who enjoy traveling, being totally immersed in a different culture, developing their foreign languages, or launching into an unpredictable adventure, studying abroad is certainly a unique educational opportunity. Many American colleges and universities are offering a wide variety of international programs, and students are encouraged to explore this option in higher education. The length of these programs can range from weeks to semesters or even years. While there may be positive elements to studying abroad, it should not be a requirement for college students from the United States.
Pursuing higher education is a choice and decision that must be considered by every young person. Each year, graduating high school students have the opportunity to decide which educational institution, location, field of study, and financial commitments are suitable to their specific needs and interest. It should always be the decision of the individual on whether he or she wishes study in a foreign country. Mandating oversees study is unnecessary and contrary to the values and ideals of this country.
One common argument for studying abroad is that international schools may offer better education. However, this is purely subjective and is a matter of personal opinion. American universities and colleges have long histories of academic successes and achievements. Many world leaders, inventors, scientists, and educators have graduated from these institutions. Foreign students from every corner of the globe want to be educated in the U.S. In some cases, the coursework in foreign schools may be less challenging and students may find it difficult to transfer those credits to an American school.
The cost to study abroad is major hurdle for most students. While there are oversea scholarships are available, many students may be ineligible due to different reasons. Obtaining more students loans is an option but it would only increase the level of debt for many families and produce long-term consequences that cannot be easily overcome. A college education is the U.S. is expensive, however, studying abroad can be equally or more costly due to airfares, living in an upscale city, and an individual’s inexperience with handling foreign finances.
In the mind of an individual, distance from family and friends could cause problems mentally. Things like home-sickness and isolation can have an affect with student. As a result, academically, a student may be a scholar one day at home but the next day they are struggling in their studies when afar. An international school might not bring out the best in a student unlike a local or domestic school.
