The Most Valuable Lesson I've Learned in High School by Janelle - November 2013 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my years in high school, I’ve learned many things. However, most importantly, I’ve learned that you can depend on no one but yourself. Only you know what you want and how to achieve it. You may need guidance but being dependent on someone else may set you up for failure. Priorities are set by individuals and most times people are not going to put your life over theirs’. They are going to be more concerned with their life and their problems. One example that enforces this is the college and scholarship application process. For me, money is a scarce commodity and anything you do in this world requires money. Financial need should not be a reason why I am not able to be admitted into a reputable college. In order for me to win any scholarships, I have to be the one that search for scholarships, as well as, apply for them. No one will hand you free information, saying “Here apply for this”.

You have to drive and motivate yourself to achieve what you want. Although there is a college councilor at my high school, she will not hold your hand through the process. She will only provide you with the necessary information and you have to do your research. In order to be successful in your academic career, you can depend on only you. You have to be the one willing to get your work done properly and in a timely manner. Your grades somewhat reflect the type of person you are and only you determine whether you fail or pass. Teachers can only teach the material, you have to grasp the concepts and be able to use this knowledge where necessary.
