Active Student Classroom by JaNae - October 2014 Scholarship Essay

It’s a crystal clear sky with a warm summer breeze; a perfect day for tanning. Yet, we are stuck in a classroom with a professor who has a monotone voice who enjoys hearing the words escaping from their mouth. We sit there in a cushioned chair, gently showered in a warm light thinking how amazing it would be to be under that clear blue sky, getting a tan. We have all been in this kind of situation at least once in our life. How much easier would it be if it was required for everyone to go outside and learn in the fresh, sunny air? That is my ideal classroom; one that is required to have their students study outside whenever there is a sunny day.

Being a student is hard enough; we don’t need to be stuck inside for hours on end. We need to go outside and get our blood flowing. Whenever there is a sunny day all classes should be required to go outside and teach/learn. For one thing, it will give a broader range of activities/lessons the professor can use to teach the students and the students will be able to learn where there is fresh air for the brain to function. Also, using nature as examples will be easier to remember because most students see nature every day. Keeping the students active during class will keep their blood flowing to the brain and the sun will give them energy to stay focused while the professor teaches the lesson. An active classroom is an ideal classroom.
