The Quiet Shift by Jamie - July 2025 Scholarship Essay
If I could give my past self one piece of advice, it would be this: Prioritize communication and time management, they will open doors you never imagined.
Growing up, I was very introverted. I didn’t have many friends and often kept to myself. I was quiet, shy, and afraid to speak up, even when I had something to say. That silence made it hard to ask for help, share my ideas, or advocate for myself. Looking back, I now realize how much power there is in speaking up, and how much I could’ve gained earlier if I had simply learned to use my voice. In high school, I took International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, which taught me how critical time management is. Balancing deadlines, assignments, and expectations was challenging, but it forced me to become more organized and disciplined. That structure helped me succeed academically and built a strong foundation that I carried into college.
However, once I got to college at Florida A&M University, I quickly learned that communication is just as important, if not more so. Whether it’s asking professors for help, networking with peers, or finding opportunities on campus, communication is key. If you don’t speak up, you might miss out on something that could change your life. No one can read your mind, you have to advocate for yourself. I would tell my past self that it’s okay to be quiet, but don’t be silent. It’s okay to take your time, but don’t waste it. Learning to manage your time gives you control over your future, and learning to communicate gives you access to it. Today, I’m proud to say that I’ve grown. I’m still naturally reserved, but I’m no longer afraid to raise my hand, ask questions, or introduce myself. I’ve embraced leadership roles and have found my confidence both in the classroom and outside of it. Through my passions; culinary arts and band, I’ve learned how to work with others, express myself, and lead with purpose.
So to my past self: Speak up. Take initiative. Don’t be afraid to connect with others. Time and communication are two tools that can change everything. Use them wisely, and everything will fall into place.
