Moving Out Of The Comfort Zone by Jameson - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

Education has been defined as the process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Every student should take advantage of an opportunity to study abroad. By studying abroad a student will be exposed to cultures with different skills, values, beliefs and habits than those of the United States. The exposure to this different knowledge will broaden a student’s education resulting in a better-rounded education.

Studying abroad gives a student the opportunity to experience a different way of life and learning. A student will dive into a culture completely foreign to him. He will be able to learn new and different ways of teaching and learning by dissimilar and unique education systems. A student studying abroad will also further his education by experiencing the history of a foreign country that could be hundreds, or thousands, of years older than the United States. An additional opportunity is learning a foreign language, something appallingly lacking in the United States education system. In most cases, a student will return home with a new appreciation for life in the United States. Studying abroad allows a student to gain experiences and memories not possible by being limited to studying only in the United States.

If education is acquiring knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits then you must push the envelope and get out of a comfort zone. Studying abroad is a perfect channel to do so. If the opportunity to study abroad is offered the student should not hesitate to experience a different and new way of life and create unique memories that will last a lifetime. It offers a student the ability to meet new and different people who may not have any understanding of life and education in the United States. In this regard, the American student studying abroad is also an American ambassador to help educate foreigners of the American way of life. When differing people have an understanding of each other the opportunity for tolerance and acceptance is obtainable.
