The Future by James - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
Living in New York City my whole life, seeing all of the large buildings and the corporate workers in their crisp, nicely pressed suits had always attracted me to that atmosphere, and becoming a business student will be my ticket into this community. Some people may find the fast pace and the crowdedness of the city to be paralyzing; but to me, I couldn’t imagine being anywhere without it. That energy and aura that comes with New York City have always been my antidote to my growth as a person. These factors attracted me to the sphere of Finance and Business.
I have always wondered how companies, such as Apple and Amazon, grow to be so successful in a competitive industry. When watching the news, I wonder what is causing the stock market's red and green lines to move up and down. By learning more about these lines as well as the market trends and hazards, I can develop skills to help businesses become more innovative and financially successful. Putting a lot of focus on finance will help me grow in any industry. By enhancing my financial knowledge, I can make an impact on society and help businesses become more successful.
This newfound curiosity has led me to enhance my knowledge of financial and business principles and how they hold a significant impact. In my preparation for Advanced Placement Macroeconomics, I am learning the utter importance of resource management and financial strategies and how they are crucial to the failure and success of businesses. I am able to get a head start and teach myself what influences businesses to make certain decisions in the economic climate, which end up having a long term impact on the various markets and industries that it revolves around. Regardless, I am aware that whatever I have been taught is null and void to what actually occurs in the outside world. Teachings in the classroom fall short of the true reality that affects certain communities.
During my time in the Sophie Davis Health Professions Mentorship Program, we spent the time researching the economic disparities between low income areas and high income areas and how they have an effect on access to healthcare. From this, I had realized that access to healthcare was very low in impoverished communities as opposed to high income communities. In the low income areas of NYC, there were more liquor stores and smoke shops than medical centers. In fact, we did not even see a medical center during the first three days of our research throughout the neighborhood. However, in the high income areas, there were more luxuries, including banks, medical centers, and fashion boutiques which had been of easy access to those living in these areas. This vast difference confused me, as people were travelling one to two hours just to have access to healthcare, while for others it was just around the corner from their houses. My experience had shown me the large impact the economic disparities had on access to very essential necessities and helped me understand how to resolve them through various financial strategies.
To me, I see the college as more than just an academic stepping stone, but a place where my aspirations can become a reality. I hope to take courses that have a very diverse and collaborative student body and campus, which will help me grow both academically and professionally. It brings me great excitement to join such a community that values determination and innovation, in hopes that I could one day make a lasting and meaningful impact.
