College Benefited me Socially by James - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

Going to College is the first step into completing your professional goals. College is that time where one figures out who they want to be in the world. For me the college experience wasn’t much like you see in a good old 90 movies, but my college experience was interesting to say the least. The part of my college experience that I am most thankful for is the time that I became open minded to friendship and became established as an individual among a group of friends.
Growing up I was a very socially awkward guy. I was very creative, talented, and intelligent, but afraid to express myself vocally. I would freeze up around family members, friends, and even teachers. You could feel the fear of conversation in the air, when sitting next to me.
However, when I began college all the social awkwardness disappeared. When I met friends that accepted me for my individuality, I became a social butterfly. I found myself becoming the voice of the group, a leader if you must say. I noticed that my group of friends would start asking me what were our plans today, as if I was their leader. I wasn’t at all controlling, but confident.
I had gone from being a socially awkward individual to an open walking book of creativity. I’m thankful for the experience, because I gained the confidence to help me progress in this thriving world of very opinionated individuals.
