The School Accomplishment I'm Most Proud Of by Jalyn - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
I’m a senior at Grayson High School. During my high school years, I've been a Student Council member, Junior Beta Club member, Varsity Cheerleader, Student Led Leadership Team member, DECA member, and a participant in the Gwinnett Bar Association Law Explorers Program. I’ve taken all Honors classes, some AP classes, and consistently been on Academic Honor Roll and a Scholar Athlete. I have extensive computer skills, appreciate and respect diversity, adapt easily to change, have great organizational skills, excellent communication skills, and perform tasks well as an individual or as a team member. During my freshman through junior years, I assisted the Audio/Video Technology department to record Shiloh High’s special events and graduations. Also, I have strong leadership and customer service skills. This year, I’m a part of Work Based Learning and work part-time at Stone Mountain Park. Recently, I received a $25 customer recognition award for going over and beyond the call of duty.
While I’m proud of my many accomplishments, the school accomplishment that I’m most proud of is my role as a Student Led Leadership Team member during high school. The goal of the Student Led Leadership Team is to learn career and life skills, then teach them to middle school students. I was taught coping skills, problem resolution skills, team building skills, resume writing, interviewing and job preparation skills. Then I taught these skills to our fellow students/peers. In the society of “snitches get stitches,” we’re also taught that if you see something, say something. I experienced this firsthand when some girls were getting high in the restroom, and I reported them. Although there could’ve been repercussions, I knew it was the right thing to do. I have to lead by example.
These are life skills that I’ve learned that I use presently and will use in my future. Also annually, my team talks to the 8th graders at the middle school that will be in high school the following year. We tell them about the challenges, pros and cons of high school. We answer questions that they have about our experiences. It feels good to have the younger kids look up to us, and want to participate in the same sports or activities that we do. Again, we lead by example. As a result of my strong leadership skills, they were noticed by my Social Studies teacher Mr. Lee. He invited me to be a part of the Young Life camp to help mentor the younger high school students during one week of camp at Windy Gap, NC. Being in a leadership role has been an amazing and rewarding experience for me.
