Dream Big, Help Bigger. by Jalicia - May 2025 Scholarship Essay
If I was blessed with unlimited time and money, I’d want to use what I’ve learned in school to actually help people and make the world a better place. School’s taught me a lot of things that are super useful, and others that, well, probably won’t come in handy here (but hey, time management has definitely saved me more than once.) Along the way, I’ve picked up skills like problem solving, teamwork, staying organized, being independent, and thinking things through. And yes, I’ve collected random science facts that I’d love to finally put to good use thanks to my teachers.
First, I’d focus on education. So many families struggle to afford proper schooling for their children. That is becoming a major issue today because many students are being robbed from their education, having to settle to local and community colleges due to tuition rates being so outrageously pricey. I would invest in all colleges where people who are dedicated to their careers would be able to further their education to the fullest and not worry about those financial burdens. I’d make sure every student, no matter where they live, has a chance to learn and dream big just as I do.
Then I’d move on to helping the planet. I’ve learned enough in science class to know that Earth is struggling. Which I notice many don’t make this a deal as it needs to be. If we valued the environment the way we value money (something we hate wasting), we would definitely have less global issues. Therefore I’d invest in clean energy, plant trees, clean up oceans, and support inventions that make life better without hurting the planet. And continue the work few started, giving out reusable water bottles, straws, bags, anything reusable helps!
Mental health is another issue I really care about. A lot of students deal with stress, anxiety, and feeling alone. Not everyone can afford a therapist, and while school counselors try their best, they’re often overwhelmed especially in big schools like mine with thousands of students. In reality, guidance counselors sometimes are not enough. I’d make sure there were more safe spaces to talk, get help, and just breathe. I experience myself being so passionate about free therapy programs being enforced in schools because growing up who doesn’t need guidance? People who unfortunately don’t have the luxury of two parent households, Everyone deserves someone to listen to, especially kids who didn’t grow up in two-parent households or in loving, supportive environments. Some students are dealing with way more than schoolwork, and they need real help, not just a quick check in from time to time. I know from personal experience how important it is to have a space where you feel seen and heard. Without that, I honestly don’t know where I’d be today. So to emphasize, therapy or support groups is where my money would go because guidance should be free, accessible, and always there when you need it.
Overall, I’d take everything I’ve learned in school, not just the facts, but the real-life lessons, and use it to help others. If I had the chance to make life a little better, safer, and more hopeful for people, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Plus if I get to do it with unlimited time and money? Even better.
