Are leadership skills necessary for college success? by Jakob - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Some people are born to be followers, and some people are born to be leaders. While everyone should possess leadership qualities, some people do not. Leaders cannot really accomplish many tasks without people that are willing to serve. Personally, I prefer to serve. I do not possess many leadership qualities, and I am just fine with that. It’s not a necessity to have leadership skills for college.
For one, students hardly interact with other students. College is a place for independent study; to further your knowledge in a certain subject area. Students may interact with other students in that aspect: to help you understand something you don’t understand. Students also socialize with each other for companionship. In order to make friends with people in college, you don’t need to have leadership skills.
Plenty of people go throughout college without participating in any sort of fraternities or sororities. They flourish through college without needing any leadership skills. College is just not the place to show off your leadership.
Leadership skills are very useful, and it’s not completely irrelevant to college. There are certain programs around campus that need student leaders. For everyone to have leadership abilities is certainly an impossible expectation. Some people love to serve others. Certain majors may ask for that, but plenty of them do not.
