Education Gratitude by Jakob - November 2020 Scholarship Essay
“One size fits all” isn’t always the best approach to school. In my experience, homeschooling has provided different opportunities including learning how to manage my time effectively, providing time to learn additional skills as well as working and volunteering, and allowing the opportunity to develop communication skills with others of all ages. Homeschooling has taught me the importance of independent learning. I will always be thankful for the many opportunities I’ve had to learn outside of a classroom.
As an actor, I receive auditions and jobs that take place when school is occurring. Since I am homeschooled, I can rearrange my classes for acting jobs, auditions, and script practice. While filming, I can finish my coursework between shots as opposed to others who need to make up their classes later. This flexibility has helped me to learn task prioritization and how to balance my limited time each day.
Ever since first grade, I have been homeschooled. Spending more focused time on my schoolwork allowed for extra time for extracurricular projects and the ability to accelerate in my studies. I spent time on activities such as creative writing, guitar, karate, and I even built a working computer to use for school.
As an independent learner, I’m often required to research subjects on my own to gain a deeper understanding of the topic. As a result, I’ve learned from interviewing others, researching online or in the library to provide reputable sources, listening to lectures and videos, and reviewing course curriculum.
Throughout my schooling, I have worked with people of all ages. I attended a screenwriting class as the only minor in a class of 30-year-old adults and communicated my thoughts effectively. It’s been a blessing to meet people from different backgrounds and all age groups and learn how to relate to them.
I have thoroughly enjoyed and continually learned throughout my educational experience. Through development of time management, extracurricular activities, and communication skills, I can continue to personally improve with what I’ve used in homeschooling. It has provided many interesting opportunities and helped shape me into who I am today.
