The difference in educational rights and privileges by Jailee - January 2021 Scholarship Essay

“I went all through high school not reading one book.” Let that sink in. This is from a conversation between my friends and I in high school. We were jocks, we did not have time for homework, reading, or studying. Instead we played sports, had weekday sleepovers, and constantly rode our bikes to the nearest Taco Bell. I never took school seriously, until college hit me. I had to learn time management, study tools, and how to use a TI 83 calculator. I believe high school is right and college is a privilege.

The basic high school diploma can give you the education to have a job to make a basic living. You may not own a four-story house, or an under ground pool. But you can always have food on the table and a roof over your head. Without a high school diploma it would be difficult to make enough to live off of. The basic fundamentals of reading, writing, comprehension, science, and history are all rights. That is why I believe education up to a high school diploma is right

College or post secondary education are privileges. I always took high school for granted because I was given it as a basic rate. If college was the same thing, then I would have taken that for granted too, but in my first semester when I had to pay $3000 out of pocket, I knew it was time to focus. If I fail or slack off, that’s my hard earned money I will never get back. That $3000 could I’ve gotten me 50 pairs of $60 shoes. That $3000 could have gotten me 754 4 for $4’s at Wendy’s. But instead it went towards my education. That $3000 was meworking for $11 an hour for 272 hours, so I could afford to get myself through college. So in theory, high school the right, every kid deserves a high school diploma to make a decent wage for basic life needs. College degrees are privilege or else, if they are just handed out, people will take them for granted.
