More Productive as a Night Owl by Jaida - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

I definitely consider myself as a night owl. I always stay up late and wake up late. I find if i do this that I always feel more refreshed and productive at night. I get far more done at night than at any other time of my day, even on those days when I rise early. I am not bombarded with questions, emails, texts, phone calls, or social media, and can actually concentrate for long periods at a time without getting interrupted. Researchers at a university in Milan have noted a spike in creativity among night owls, noting that they are much more likely to come up with outside-the-box solutions than their early bird counterparts.Researcher Satoshi Kanazawa found that highly intelligent children tend to become nocturnal adults who prefer to stay up late at night and sleep-in seven days a week. Yet another study at the University of Madrid found that night owls tested higher in general intelligence and even earned higher incomes than early birds. I find my most creative and productive time was from the early evening until two or three am. Sleeping in until eleven always allows me to start my day off feeling rested and refreshed. Scientific studies have shown that night people have more stamina than early risers. Each given their natural schedule, the morning person will become less alert and slower after 10 hours of wakefulness. Night owls show more resistance to sleepiness and can stay sharp for longer periods of time. ight people tend to be smarter too. Psychology today reports that the most intelligent people are more likely to be night owls than early birds. A study of young Americans showed that more intelligent children went on to become more nocturnal as grownups than did their less intelligent counterparts.Night workers are likely to be creative more than the early risers. Researchers at a university in Milan showed that there is a spike in creativity among night owls. They can think out of the box more easily than the early bird counterparts. This ability makes them more creative.British Researchers found that the level of stress hormone cortisol of early risers is typically higher and the high level stay around all day. In case of night owls, they don’t get the same level of stress hormone cortisol, so they can stay relatively calm all day. Researchers at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Miami found that evening-oriented people are also more creative than their morning and intermediate counterparts. As Professor Marina Giampietro explains, being in a nocturnal environment "may encourage the development of a non-conventional spirit and of the ability to find alternative and original solutions.”
