The Future by Jaedun - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
To me, architecture is the unique combination of artistry, precision, and calculations. During my freshman year in my intro to engineering class, I was given the task to create a bridge out of pasta and marshmallows to see which bridge would hold the most amount of sand. There were so many difficulties that came with this project, but it taught me how to think creatively, be a team player and the technical drawing that is required in the field of architecture. We first had to draw an outline to demonstrate how the bridge would essentially look. Any miscalculations would throw off the entire bridge. This was an exciting task despite its complications. I grew up playing with legos, which allowed me to express my imagination and showcase my creative side; building different structures and ultimately, designing anything that came to mind. I found myself drawings sketches that continuously looked horrible to many, but I never gave up. Everyday a new idea would pop in my head from graffiti art to blueprints for homes.
As I continued to draw, I would build upon my drawings, adding elements that could enhance their appearances. This process was filled with drawing simple segments that eventually appealed to the human eye. I continued to improve upon my 2D drawings, which soon led to me drawing 3D sketches. As I grew older, I began to shadow professionals and I even helped my father with our home renovation floor plans. After awhile, these sketches became finished products. Two main buildings really solidified my dream of wanting to become an architect; The Main Hotel and Paramount Miami World Center. I remember trying to duplicate these fascinating buildings because their glass exterior was so eye-catching, this is really when I knew I wanted to pursue a degree in architecture. Ranging from landscape architecture, industrial design, interior design and general architecture, the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech is currently ranked #6 in the nation for its architecture programs. After completing a rigorous application, I was admitted into this elite university. Being that Virginia Tech is so highly qualified, I believe the university is capable of pushing me to exceed my limits. From the classroom environment, the campus setting, and the professors’ guidance, I believe I will excel at this institution. Throughout my five years at Virginia Tech, I will obtain and Bachelors and a Masters degree, enabling me to leap out into the world and fulfill my dream of becoming and architect. There students are given numerous internships and job communities from both alumni and different companies that visit during conferences. With that being said, I will be able to develop connections and relationships with these professionals, who can guide me into establishing my career. My plans during my time in college not only consist of me developing relationships with professionals, but also developing my skills during hands-on studio sessions, AutoDesk Inventor and transforming these sketches into 3D animated designs.
After receiving my Masters degree, I seek to establish a building I will call, “The Leadership Academy”, which will host a specialty program designed to educate and propel students to reach their fullest potential. Essentially, its main goal is to inspire students to be themselves and become leaders in their communities, discussing topics from racial discrimination, gender discrimination, bullying, ignorant stereotypes, self-acceptance and critical depression, just to name a few. This is important to me because one’s teenage years are some of the most challenging and vital years; these years hold a valuable part in shaping their character. This building will have 30 classrooms, a rooftop maze, and a vibrant atmosphere to spark creativity and a sense of comfort. The main inspiration behind this program was sparked because of the insecurities I had as a child and the lack of confidence I can remember so well. In addition to my drawing skills, volunteering also helped me to develop my love for architecture. I view architects as people who give back to the community by designing what the citizens want and what they need. They have the ability to change the perception of a city and bring a vibrant atmosphere to an area.
