Storyteller meets Sports Media by Jaden - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

Growing up I played basketball, football, ran track and baseball, this was clearly my mom’s way of keeping my siblings and I busy all year, but it was truly a way of life. The thrill of scoring a touchdown, to the rush of sinking a game winning three pointer, sports gave me a sense of purpose and community. I found the way announcers and journalists brought games to life was fascinating. Over time, I realized that my passion for sports could extend beyond playing. This led me to want to pursue a career in sports media.

Sports have always been a way to unite people, regardless of their background, race, or culture. I’ve seen how sports can break down barriers and bring communities together. From overcoming personal struggles to teamwork and resilience, sports have a powerful way of telling stories that resonate with everyone.

I was always drawn to storytelling, especially in the context of sports. They weren’t just a form of entertainment but a way for me to escape the struggles around me and to dream about a future filled with possibility. As I grew older, I became fascinated with the idea of sports media, a career that would allow me to combine my love of writing with my passion for sports. The ability to tell the stories of athletes and teams, to capture the emotion of the game, and to represent the untold narratives of people from communities like mine, inspired me to apply to my first choice school Morehouse College and study Journalism in Sports, Culture, and Social Justice

I also saw this as an opportunity to make an impact. Representation in media matters, especially for Black athletes. Too often, we’re portrayed through a narrow lens, focusing only on struggles or stereotypes. I want to change that narrative, showcase the full spectrum of experiences and stories. I want to highlight not just the victories but the hard work, sacrifices, and cultural significance that go into being an athlete.

Choosing sports media was not just about my love for sports it was about using that passion to influence the way people see and understand the game. Through storytelling, I can connect with audiences and share the stories that often go untold. This is why I decided to pursue a major in sports media, and ultimately in my career I can make a lasting impact on the world of sports.
